An Introduction to the Portland Tango Community Fund

The Portland Tango Community Fund was created, initially, to provide scholarships for lessons with Portland tango teachers as well as with visiting tango teachers for Portland Tango dancers who could otherwise not afford such lessons. In this way, the Fund supports dancers, teachers, and organizers of workshops.

Additionally, after the scholarship program is well established, the Fund would like to support outreach (informing the public about the opportunities to learn and dance tango in Portland), and to offer some limited support ,when needed, for organizers of visiting tango teachers.
People seriously interested in learning to dance tango but who can’t afford lessons can apply for scholarships independently or through the teacher with whom they wish to study. Scholarships will range from ⅓ to ⅔ of the costs of the lessons, and will be available for class series. For visiting teachers, people wishing to get some help can apply independently or through the organizer of the visiting teacher. Decisions about scholarships will be made by the Fund administrator(s) with advice from the teachers and organizers.
Funding occurs in two ways:

1. Asking many individuals for annual donations of a relatively small sum, and many individuals have already offered to help.

2. Fund-raising at milongas during one week in the year. Donations might be solicited from those who attend the milongas, and many milonga organizers have already generously offered to donate part of their proceedings for that week.
The accounts for the fund will be transparent and open to anyone who wishes to see them, and reports on the generation and use of the fund will be made periodically on this list.

Friday Sept 30th is

a 5th (Philanthropy) Friday of the month and

a benefit for the Portland Tango Community Fund!

and

the very last Corazón de Tango!

We (Scott Forbes and I) want it to be special, yet affordable fun, yet low-key with a focus on just dancing, talking, nibbling — enjoying the company of friends old & new while raising money for the Fund.

So!

There will be NO auction, silent or otherwise, no videos, no raffles.

I (Megan) will teach the Lesson for Beginners & Reviewers from 8 – 9:00.

Scott will talk VERY VERY VERY VERY briefly about the Fund.

Most importantly,

MOMO will DJ really wonderful, irresistible tango music from 9 – 12:30.

The food will be better than ever and the cost will be lower than ever!

Just $5 minimum (of course with an option, of course, to give more).

The Portland Tango Community Fund to provide financial assistance to worthy dancers, encouraging their enthusiasm for the dance, and supporting their fullest participation in the local tango culture.

Who knows what such a tanguero/a might contribute?

Dancing, for sure!

Djing? musical aptitudes? cinematography skills?

teaching and/or performing whiz-bang-ery?

artwork? brilliant event ideas? execution/implementation talents?

??? ??? ??????? ??? ???

On a more personal level, I want this evening to give back to Portland tango in thanks for all that Portland tango has given me:

a platform for causes I care about, a training ground for my fledgling organizational impulses, an incubator for my energies and passions, a nest of fellow enthusiasts, playmates and workmates, and of course, trance dances!

Portland Tango Community Fund – How it started

For several months I have discussed with Portland’s tango teachers and organizers about what might be done to support and strengthen the Portland tango community. As a consequence of these discussions, a Portland Tango Community Fund is being proposed, and we already have many commitments to donate to this Fund.
